Chinese-language site cnBeta.com publishes what it says is a datasheet of Sony 1.5-inch 4.85MP IMX189AEG image sensor featuring "Active Pixel Color Sampling." The new stacked sensor features rectangular 9.78um x 4.89um pixels with global shutter. The site says that each pixel can sense three RGB colors. The sensor is planned to be used in an oncoming Sony Xperia Z4 smartphone. Very fast frame rates are quoted:
Another stacked Sony sensor appearing in other cnbeta.com post is 1MP IMX197HSK. It has a square 9.78um global shutter pixel and features high frame rates:

So what is the advantage of "active pixel color sampling?"
ReplyDeleteDid I read it correctly, it can do 2K @16KFPS? How would the rest of logic handle this speed?
Right, and it outputs the data through 12960 subLVDS channels.
Delete4.89um, not 2.89um
ReplyDeleteThanks. Fixed.
Deletevery likely faked
ReplyDeleteProbably... Power supply voltages look strange.
DeleteAnd definitely not for a smartphone at those sensor sizes...
ReplyDeleteReally, a 23.7 diagonal sensor in a phone? That means a lens with 3-4 times the focal length of a typical phone camera lens for the same FoV (which will, all other things being equal, push the elements proportionately further from the sensor. Then, unless you are to throw away much of the advantage of a larger sensor, you'll want to keep the f-stop reasonably comparable, which means a proportionately bigger diameter lens,
ReplyDeleteEven if you were to reduce the lens length through some design complexity (some for of squashed telephoto), and squeeze it into the depth of the phone, you would then be faced with the issue of extreme angle of incidence issues in trying to cover a 23.7mm diagonal sensor from a few mm away. That's a huge problem for digital sensors.
unless you plan to use (& sell) external lenses?
