Stream of News from EI 2011 Continues

Albert Theuwissen published his second news report from Electronic Imaging 2011 conference. Two very interesting presentations have been reviewed:

Paper from NHK, presented by Ryohei Funatsu, “Single-chip color imaging for UHDTV camera with a 33M-pixel CMOS image sensor

Optimizing quantum efficiency in a stacked CMOS sensor”, by Lumiense Photonics, HanVision Co., and Alternative Vision Corp. Presentation was done by Dave Gilblom of Alternative Vision Corp.

  1. Anybody have experience using the Foveon sensors with wide-angle lenses? (90deg HFOV and up) I'd go for some optimization of the inter-pixel light transfer in a stacked CMOS sensor.

  2. 1. Albert, I think NHK should have mentioned who designed and fabbed the sensor. I know, but did they mention it? Credit should be given, I think.

    2. I am trying to understand the advantage of the stacked structure at this size pixel. 12 e- is good for in-pixel CDS using some clamp circuit but not competitive in low light. I don't think it is cheaper than BSI. It might be good for larger, hyperactive pixels. I am pretty sure there is a good rationale/application, I am just having trouble figuring it out. So, since Dave comments here, maybe he can comment on the long term goal of this project.

I agree with Albert's comment on the dark current. I am guessing 500-2000 e-/sec will be what they measure at RT.

Also, without complete charge transfer you will get a lag signal, and even if cancelled, it will contribute shot noise in the dark.

  3. Anonymous - This sensor isn't about Foveon, but in any event, go to http://www.rytterfalk.com/ and you can see images taken with wide angle and fisheye lenses using the various Foveon sensors (mostly F13).

  4. To Eric : the supplier of the sensor for the NHK camera was not mentioned, but I guess most of us know who designed and fabricated the device. Because NHK did not mention their name, I think it is not up to me to do this ...

  5. Eric, Albert,
It's public information, why all the mystery? Did NHK replace it by another?

  6. I think there is another design team involved. It is nice that NHK is spreading the work around. DALSA for CCD version, Photobit for first CMOS, Micron, Forza, and maybe now a new entry from Asia.
