CIS shipments for smartphones shrank in 2022 and 2023

  1. I wonder about total worldwide CMOS image sensor shipments. The last clear post I saw was here on Oct 21 2022 sharing an IC Insights bar graph. (Is IC insights out of business? Last post on their website was 2022.) Does anyone have any update to that bar graph since then with '22 and '23 actuals?

Any thoughts from the community about 2 years downward trend in smartphone sensors (which I guess is due to a similar but far less severe trend in smartphone volume- see https://www.statista.com/statistics/263437/global-smartphone-sales-to-end-users-since-2007/ ). Does anyone trust TechInsight numbers? Hard to trust any data that labels the vertical axis "millions" without actual number-labels.

  2. TechInsights acquired IC Insights in 2022: https://tracxn.com/d/acquisitions/acquisitions-by-techinsights/___nEt1WawVFwuXBBAEDGOcLPutIvz0IVwoJ_NxsjZq2I

    1. Thanks for sharing that. Still curious about actuals total worldwide shipments 2022 and 2023, not to mention the actual numbers.

  3. Hello Eric, hello all,
In Yole we do also cover market research and technology watch for CMOS imaging, including smartphone applications: https://www.yolegroup.com/product/report/status-of-the-cmos-image-sensor-industry-2023/.
We estimate that CIS for mobile peaked in 2020 with about 5.5Bunits, followed by a slight decrease to about 5.1-5.2 Bunits these last years, as a soft landing following the bubble that initiated from US ban policies that had induced excessive CIS orders from 2017. A slower growth should resume from 2024, sustained by further sensing opportunities to support photography as neuromorphic sensing (event-based), depth ranging, multispectral farther in the future... Feel free to reach out for further discussions.
    Cheers.

    1. Thanks Florian for sharing that. So you think for mobile (which I guess means smartphone) 2020 at 5.5Bunits, and then reduced to 5.1-5.2 for 2021, 2022, 2023, more or less. Aside from mobile, what about the volume for other applications? I guess 0.1-0.3 Bunits but maybe it is more?

    2. Do we know how many goes into the Automotive market and AR/VR/XR?
