Tessera DOC Publishes MEMS AF Actuator Flyer

Tessera Digital Optics Corp. published its MEMS AF flyer having nice feature list and pictures:
  • Fits in 6.5 mm x 6.5 mm x < 6.0 mm camera module size
  • Supports image resolution ≥5 MP
  • Centered optical aperture for centered optics
  • Supports 1/4” and 1/3” optical formats
  • Low operating voltage (2.8 to 4.5 V)
  • Zero power consumption at the infinity position to hold focus in any orientation
  • Low peak current (7 µA peak) and low power (0.25 mW maximum) to change focus position
  • Positioning repeatability: ± 3 µm
  • Hysteresis performance: ± 3 µm
  • Built-in high precision position sensor for autofocus calibration
  • Fast settling time: ≤15ms max
  • Long lifetime: 10,000,000 cycles or more
  • High shock tolerance: 10,000 g
  • Temperature Range: -20º to 70º C
  • Reflow compatible

integrated MEMS AF

Another DOC flyer presents AF+shutter actuator, where the shutter design appears like mechanical style:

It's said to be fitting to 8.5 x 8.5 x 6mm camera module and has 1M cycles life time.

  1. Amazing work!
With an electrical shutter, camera module became extremely compact.

  2. so electronic rolling shutter will be OK now!

  3. Well, took quite a while, but "yay!" for the former Siimpel team! Hope it is a marketplace winner.

  4. How is this better than the lensvector solution?

  5. Well, assuming not a lot has changed with the MEMS approach, it moves a lens. The MEMS motion is much more controllable, repeatable, and more shock resistant than the predominant voicecoil AF. The Lensvector solution is to change the refractive index of an optical element. So, I think from a large resolution sensor point of view, moving the lens will give better optical performance than changing the refractive index in an unmovable lens. I am not an optics guys but I think when you change the index of one lens you should also change the prescription of all lens in the stack for optimum performance in secondary metrics. Maybe it is not so important however and the LensVector solution is good enough.
What phones or modules use the LensVector technology?

  6. I wonder what are the costs?
