Haptix Follows LeapMotion Steps

LeapMotion reports more than 1M downloads from its application store since ist launch 3 weeks ago, on July 22. The company has devoted a Youtube video to this milestone:

Business Insider: Meanwhile, Darren Lim, a 20-year-old Thiel Fellow, and Lai Xue, a 21-year-old former engineer at Intel, launched Haptix along with a $100,000 Kickstarter campaign to make a similar 3D camera for computer interaction:


Haptix camera treats any surface like a multi-touch screen or a trackpad. A key difference between Leap Motion and Haptix is said to be that Haptix doesn't rely on infrared. It only uses infrared when the illumination is low, whereas Leap Motion always uses infrared. Haptix device consists of two camera modules with 640x360 resolution and 120-150deg angle of view, attached to a microcontroller which does most of the processing:
