SPIE IE Image Sensors and Imaging Systems Session in Danger
SPIE Electronic Imaging 2015 Image Sensors and Imaging Systems session is in danger. The session committee was supposed to select 40 best papers out of 50-60 ones. However, by now, only 8 papers have been submitted. The call for paper deadline has been extended to Aug. 15. The submission effort is limited:
My opinion after 40 years of exhibiting and presenting papers at SPIE events: The problem is simply that there is very little imaging in the Photonics West exhibit hall. There is also no exhibit at the IS&T meeting where these papers are to be presented - in a hotel away from the PW exhibits. The PW exhibits are centered on lasers and optics, not imaging. Almost all of the imaging equipment vendors have moved their efforts to SPIE DSS. The rest of their effort goes to special SPIE shows like Astronomical Instruments or to machine vision shows. SPIE Medical Imaging, which would be a good place to show imaging capabilities, has no longer has an exhibit. Much of the attendance there is defensive.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, Electronic Imaging has always been a stepchild. 10-15 years ago, there was an actual SIPE electronic Imaging conference with exhibits. it was small, but the audience was focused. Then the exhibit was discontinued and then it turned into an IS&T event at the SF airport concurrent with but distantly located from Photonics West. A couple of years ago, it was moved into San Francisco near PW but there is still no attempt to connect exhibits with it. The BiOS event just before PW has more imaging but it does not overlap EI. This makes no sense to me.
I sell image sensors and I can tell you that none of the shows by SPIE or anyone else are particularly appealing to me. For SPIE, if the exhibitors don't see the value in presenting in a tech session, the number of submissions will be small.
Too many image sensor meetings! ISSCC Call out, IEDM just closed, 2015 IISW coming in a month or so, IEEE Trans. Electron Devices Special Issue Call coming soon,...
ReplyDeleteLet's make a list of image sensor meetings:
Jan - SPIE
Feb - ISSCC, SPIE PW&EI
Mar - Image Sensor London (commercial)
April - SPIE DSS
May - Fraunhofer workshop (even years)
June - IISW (odd years), OSA, CEA Leti Workshop, Image Sensors Auto, VLSI Symposia
July
August - SPIE San Diego
Sept - Particle tracking, Bonn Germany
Oct - SEMI new image sensor session
Nov - Radiation workshop, Toulouse France
Dec - IEDM
Do not forget ESSDERC/ESSCIRC, although at these conferences the imaging harvest (not harvest imaging) is getting smaller year after year. BTW, this is also true at ISSCC and IEDM, less and less imaging papers are submitted, accepted and presented.
ReplyDeleteIn September we also have Image Sensors Americana in SF.
I used to publish papers in ESSDERC/ESSCIRC which was a worldwide top level conference on solid states circuits. But now it becomes less and less known, what are the reasons please ?

ReplyDeleteFeb - (1)ISSCC, (2)SPIE PW&EI
Mar - Image Sensor London (commercial)
April - SPIE DSS
May - Fraunhofer workshop (even years)
June - (1)IISW (odd years), (2)OSA, (3)CEA Leti Workshop, (4)Image Sensors Auto, (5)VLSI Symposia (6) Computer Elements Workshop (one time?) Vail
July
August - SPIE San Diego
Sept - (1)Particle tracking, Bonn (2)Image Sensors America SF, (3) ESSDERC/CIRC
Oct - SEMI new image sensor session Grenoble
Nov - Radiation workshop, Toulouse
Dec - IEDM
All these conferences require original work. In this case, people have to make a choice since real original work can not be published at many places. It's hard to imagine that a guy can publish in all these conferences with always "original" works. For me, this is not possible at all.

Just in the US:
ReplyDeleteEmbedded Vision Summits, next one in April 2015 in Santa Clara.
IS&T Color & Imaging conference - November
SPIE Medical Imaging - February
OSA Imaging Systems and Applications - July
and probably 100 other segment shows that feature imaging prominently
Maybe Vladimir should add a conference calendar to the blog
+1 for the calendar.
ReplyDeleteITE yokohama in December
Stuttgart Vision show in November
I was thinking of meetings with calls for technical papers or invited papers. Not vision trade shows for various applications. That is a whole other topic, even though sometimes they are tied together.
ReplyDeleteIt is convenient sometimes to have a place to present recent work and not have to wait for an annual cycle or two year cycle. On the other hand, it is good to present someplace where you can interact with many knowledgeable peers, be among other quality papers, and also have some impact.
We deliberately made IISW (before it was called IISW) every 2 years because we did not think a greater frequency was justified. I still feel that way.
It would be nice to have a meeting calendar. If Vlad does not do it, I think we can host a calendar on the IISS website for our community. Vlad already does us all a huge service with this blog and asking for more is asking a lot.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteCan somone submit the same paper in tow or more conferences of the SPIE 2015 ?
My paper can belong to several conferences.
Thanks a lot !
I think that when you submit you can indicate that your paper may be suitable for multiple conferences. In this case we can move the paper to another conference if it is not selected for the primary one. We can also organize joint sessions if there are multiple such papers.
DeleteThanks for the calendar! I love this community. :)
ReplyDeleteBtw: The "Image Sensor Auto" was quite good. I attended it this year for the first time, and was positively surprised by the number / quality of delegates / speeches.
I'm curious: We're currently working on a paper in the area of CMOS filters (IR-Cut) which are currently assembled / glued in front of the CMOS. Which conference would be most suited for publishing such a paper? Given the high number of potential conferences there must be one that is most suited for this?
@ Sameh Megrhi: From what I know that depends on the conference organizers. From what I know the SPIE 2015 only accepts exclusive papers. About other conferences I do not know...
Thank you very much for the response this is the first time i attempt to submit in SPIE.
ReplyDeleteThey require 1000 abstract and 500 summary.
I'm really confused, as i undrestood the abstract refers to the paper. 1000 words abstract isn't it too short ? or i submit the abstract and then a detailed paper (8 pages) ?
An other question: If i submit the abstract can it contain tables and figures ? in the website i need to copy/paste a text in words or i need to submit a M.word or latex document???
I'm sorry for the many questions :)
Megri, you should ask these questions to your PhD supervisor.
DeleteThis is the problem i can't reach him !
DeleteYou have chosen a wrong university with a wrong supervisor. Change as soon as possible.
DeleteSameh,
DeleteAn abstract is quite simple. It is not a complete summary of the work
The basics:
1 - Tell what work you plan to do and why - a couple of sentences
2 - Describe the work you did - the process - a couple more sentences
3 - Report your results - a couple more sentences
4 - Tell what your results mean - one or two sentences.
The SPIE numbers are the maximums for each submission. The abstract will be published in the guide to the technical sessions for the conference.
SPIE has thousands of abstracts on their website. Read a few and you will see what to do.
Regards, Dave
Summary and abstract are only for the approval process. The full paper will be requested later (the exact date depends on your session).
DeleteThank you !
Delete@123 : this can help you ? :http://spie.org/Publications/Proceedings/Paper/10.1117/12.981161
ReplyDeleteI think it's the same area
Is it just me or is there some major redundancy in all these meetings? How about if we try to mark what we think are the "lead" exhibitions in rev.3 of Eric's list...
ReplyDelete@ Sameh Megrhi: Thanks for the link. The paper we're currently thinking about will, in fact, be in exactly this area. :)
Good Luck !
DeleteThere are now 12 papers.
ReplyDeleteFinally about 20-25 approved papers.
ReplyDeleteArnaud, do you have any idea when the agenda of the conference will become available ?
DeleteFor those interested : Electronic Imaging and ISSCC are back-to-back, both taking place in San Francisco. So in one trip both conferences can be attended.
Albert, what's the price to attend ISSCC? It is not yet on the website.
ReplyDeleteI don't know when the conference program will be published. Not soon as we are still organizing the programs for each conference. I have not yet heard about the short course program either.
