Omnivision Adds PDAF to its 13MP RGBW Sensor

PRNewswire: OmniVision announces the OV13853, a 13MP PureCel image sensor based on 1.12um pixel with phase detection autofocus (PDAF). The OV13853 fits into a compact 8.5 mm x 8.5 mm module with a z-height of less than 5 mm. The sensor is currently in volume production.

"The mobile device ecosystem has progressed vastly, and we believe that DSLR features such as PDAF can now potentially be in play even for the mainstream smartphone segment. In light of this, we are announcing today our first 13-megapixel sensor with special phase detection pixels to support PDAF for this segment," said Badri Padmanabhan, product marketing manager at OmniVision. "The OV13853 enables PDAF and is a pin-to-pin compatible upgrade from our previous 13-megapixel sensor. The OV13853 can thus be easily integrated into mainstream smartphone designs, which can dramatically shorten lead time to production."

  1. Is this the image sensor used in the new OnePlus 2 smartphone which has much better low light sensitivity than SONY image sensor in iPhone 6?

    1. No, OnePlus 2 uses a different sensor with 1.3um pixel.

    4. What do you think the photos showing Omnivision image sensor with better low light sensitivity than SONY image sensor? SONY marketing material does not have a understandable number of low light sensitivity that allows comparison with Omnivision.

      Ziptronics sued Omnivision for BSI bonding process. SONY subsequently licensed from Ziptronics bonding patent. I wonder the difference in this OnePlus 2 tells us something about the Ziptronics claim.

    5. I think there is no magic, except in the hands of PR agencies. And I think the Ziptronics suit has NOTHING to do with this alleged camera performance. In fact, I believe your post is continued hype. Why don't you just tell us who you are?

    6. May be there is some magic in Omnivision BSI image sensor? This much-hyped VT launch will undoubted cause many high powered reviewers to test the low light claim. We will wait to see.

  2. I can't see any mention on the linked page that it's RGBW. What RGBW pattern does it use?

    1. You are right, Omnivision has never said that PureCel sensors use RGBW CFA. This was my own interpretation of PureCel name.

    2. PureCel is not OV's marketing name for RGBW. Up to now, only the 1st gen, Moto X had a OV RGBW sensor, and yet PureCel is used across many of their Bayer products.

      PureCel seems to be their rather non-specific marketing term for their current generation of BSI.
