Twin Sensor Camera

Somebody sent me a picture of a compact single-lens dual sensor "USB security camera." The unknown type image sensors placed side-by-side under the single lens:


Is anybody able to figure out the purpose of such a strange integration?

Update: An additional hint I received from the person who sent me the original images is "This sensor(s) is on a module which I believe is responsible for distance measurement (using computer vision), coupled with a laser pointer."

  1. it's used for monitoring WC, one for man and the other for woman :)-. This is just an example of imagination.

    Seperate Day sensor and night sensor? But then what happens to coverage?

  5. My best guess is that it's intended for a surveillance system with two monitors. Since there a gap between the monitors, there can be a similar gap in image sensing plane.

    1. The picture on the top is just a reference for the type/size of the Lens that is mounted on the two sensors. These two PCBs are not related to each other.

  8. Images are diffrent ones. First image is normal 1x sensor camera, second image is totally different main board...

    and this glue on sensor ;-)

    1. Good point although perhaps this is the bit under the lens although the circuit traces seem to large for this to be the case. If it is legit it could just be that they need a wide field of view and two smaller sensors and a wide lens is better than one larger much more expensive sensor.

      2nd - probably lens are 1/2,7".... how can it handle 2x1/3" sensors?

      Just for thinking ..... lenses should be 1" to see image correctly :)

  9. Most likely the intension is stereo vision using a single lens approach, but some adaption on optics is needed to make it work.
    Without any information about the lens it's just a guess ...

  10. could this be related to a recent development where some company created a single sensor depth and image sensor? the basic idea could be similar to this where two different sensors capture different aspects of the Field of View.. Just guessing.

  11. My guess: Dual lane ITS/ANPR camera, e.g for monitoring both entrance and exit of a parking garage.

  14. The lens has to provide a really large FOV due to the increased image circle. The benefit of saving one lens would be completely eaten up by the requirements to the huge single lens (optical quality,...)!

  15. It is definitely not a color and a mono sensor pair. Both have the same type. Seems to be color.

  21. This is my opinion.

    1. Two sensors price may be lower than price of the one large sensor.
    2. FPS of such system may be higher than FPS of camera with one large sensor.

    Of course you will get gap in FOV because of border between sensors but this may be trade off for getting of lower cost and higher FPS.
