All-New Tesla Autopilot Has 8 Cameras

Tesla announces that all its new cars will be equipped with its own design of autopilot hardware that will eventually provide fully autonomous driving:

"Eight surround cameras provide 360 degree visibility around the car at up to 250 meters of range. Twelve updated ultrasonic sensors complement this vision, allowing for detection of both hard and soft objects at nearly twice the distance of the prior system. A forward-facing radar with enhanced processing provides additional data about the world on a redundant wavelength, capable of seeing through heavy rain, fog, dust and even the car ahead.

To make sense of all of this data, a new onboard computer with more than 40 times the computing power of the previous generation runs the new Tesla-developed neural net for vision, sonar and radar processing software.
"

"Teslas with new hardware will temporarily lack certain features currently available on Teslas with first-generation Autopilot hardware, including some standard safety features such as automatic emergency braking, collision warning, lane holding and active cruise control. As these features are robustly validated we will enable them over the air, together with a rapidly expanding set of entirely new features. As always, our over-the-air software updates will keep customers at the forefront of technology and continue to make every Tesla, including those equipped with first-generation Autopilot and earlier cars, more capable over time."

Update: SeekingAlpha publishes its interpretation of Tesla announcement and 2.0 autopilot version development.

  1. The car's path planning raises some questions on its preference.
Upon entering the two lane road, it immediately moved onto the far left lane though the left lane was vacant.
On returning to the parking lot, it crossed the middle yellow line and drove on the wrong side momentarily. Is it really OK to not obey the signs when no cars coming from the opposite direction?

  3. This bloomberg article seems to be a sober interpretation of what's happening here: https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2016-10-21/the-only-thing-on-autopilot-at-tesla-is-the-hype-machine

Elon Musk these days reminds me of plummeting Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos. Both try to sell products with unproven technologies that affect directly on human lives. They look blindly passionate with dubious expertise on what they are doing while having some good pedigrees or backgrounds that lure money and attention of rich and influential fools.

  4. wow, seriously? drawing equivalency of Musk to Holmes?
Holmes has not shipped anything that was proven to work in the real world at all.
Musk has shipping quite a few Tesla's that customers seem generally happy with, and with driver assistance that seems to work far more often than it has not.
Musk has accomplished much, much more previously to Tesla than Holmes, the Stanford drop out, has.
