TechInsights Analyses iPhone 11 Cameras

TechInsights publishes a teardown report of the new Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max smartphone with some info on its cameras:

"We were excited during the September Apple Special Event to hear of 100% Focus Pixels for iPhone’s wide-angle camera. We expected this to coincide with full-chip dual photodiode phase detection autofocus (PDAF), however our initial findings show a familiar PDAF pattern comparable to that used for 2018 iPhone’s wide-angle camera. The analysis in progress will determine if Apple has indeed gone to dual PD as 100% Focus Pixels suggests. If true, it would be the first use of masked + dual PD PDAF we have documented."

  1. Looks like the 3 rear cameras just have different lenses. The images are still not combined to give better sensitivity. So much for the early hype about array cameras and the acquisition of Linx by Apple in 2015.

    1. You are wrong. The main camera (called Wide) has 1.4um pitch - that is the usual sweet spot, if somebody pops out the camera app. This sensor may have better AF capability.

Then the two corner cases (called Ultra-wide and tele-photo) are covered with likely less expensive sensors (and smaller optics), without any AF capability, only to provide a specific FOV change.

  2. Not just different lenses. Look at the table, two 1.0um and 1.4um pitch, very different cameras. Has anyone even shown proof of concept on silicon, combining images from multiple diff FoV cameras to increase sensitivity?

Not necessarily to increase sensitivity, but the data of one device can be used in noise filtering algorithms of the signal generated by the other device. This was explained in last year's Harvest Imaging Forum. You should have attended ....

  3. you know what?
the wide-angle camera matrix should be made using a similar technology as isocell from Samsung.
otherwise she would have strong vignetting and color shift on corners.
like a conventional and bsi-cmos matrix and a short-focus wide-angle lenses give strong vignetting and color shift on corners/

  4. Where can I find the spectral sensitivity of the iPhone 11 camera and the spectrum of the LED?
