Apple Shows iPad Pro LiDAR Use Cases

An Apple video appeared at the number of websites, such as here and here, showing its new iPad LiDAR use cases:

  3. Is this a copycat of Google's Tango program, that failed 3 years ago?
    The Tango phones had the exact same features. Why does Apple call that a revolution?

  4. apple implements features when the technology is ready. That is the difference with tango

    1. Not sure what the 'technology is ready' statement means.
      Ready for what? for who?
      The so-called technology train is heading somewhere but it looks like no one has a clue. The failure of Tango demonstrated the failure of the Tango use-cases, and these are being revamped by Apple now.

    2. I think the technology evolve and apple did thorough and elegant work. however there is a trend that it is just a stylish or "religious faith". Apple say it is yes, fans other copycat will follow. From innovative point of view, it is not really impressive. there are bunch of products with this features.

Regardless of "readiness", and other technologies worked just as well, my main observation is that there really is nothing new here with the use cases - AR gaming, AR furniture placement, measuring people for rehab (which goes back to Kinect), real estate measuring (also Kinect tech). All those have existed for some time on one platform or another, and in fact you could implement them all on an ipad before now with an add-on scanner from Occipital.

  6. I think a big factor is being overlooked. Having fabric and threads do not a jacket make. Apple will likely be successful by bridging the gap in software and hardware and by offering a single device solution as opposed to plugin devices or bulky standalone scanners (kinect).

  7. I think maybe the point being missed here is that Apple is bringing this technology in a form factor and in product(s) (soon in iPhone) that will get mass adoption without impacting user impact negatively and if anything enhancing and adding to the user experience.

    The examples cited otherwise - Kinect or hololens or the Tango phone never had the scale to drive the technology. The Tango was certainly ahead of its times and did not only suffer from lack of use cases but also severely limited by technology available (iToF with FSI technology as an example and total power > 1W for the depth sensor)

    1. I think the FOV of the ST Micro Lidar is too narrow compared to the CIS which shoots video. FOV of ST Micro's Lidar has only 30 degree FOV.
