Apple to Use BSI Sensor in iPhone 4

i-Micronews: Steve Jobs announced that the next generation iPhone 4 will have 5MP BSI sensor based on 1.75um pixels. The sensor also supports 720p/30fps HD video.

CNet speculates that the sensor is made by Sony, and that HD video in iPhone can affect Cisco Flip camcorder sales.

  2. Do you mean the camera module maker? If so, yes, there is a chance it's LG Innotek.

  3. For the sensor it's surely ovt, only sensor maker able to built enough BSI sensor.
Module: Semco or Lg innotec....or Vistapoint ;)

  4. It is an Aptina sensor. Few days ago Aptina webpage has the same images shown in the cnet video...

  5. Is Anonymous joking ? Aptina in Apple ? It was in May in this blog that reference was made to Aptina's YouTube video on their "Strategy on BSI", in which they claimed that BSI was not ready for Prime Time. If Apple's iPhone4 is not Prime Time for BSI, what is ?

  6. Take it from me - it is not Aptina

  7. Look at the videos in following websites
(for apple might be using aptina sensor)

    http://www.aptina.com/products/features/hidef.jsp

look at image at time stamp 0:45/5.36

I felt both those are from the same sensor....

    its just a speculation...

  8. It's an Omnivision OV5650.

No other sensor maker is anywhere near being able to produce a 1.75µ 5MP BSI module, let alone 24 million of them.

Aptina don't mass produce BSI modules.

  9. I estimate it is OV5653...

  10. OV5650, TC FC process

  11. How much the apple pay this rear end sensor ?

  12. you will see, even with BSI, the performance under low lux is still.... :o
why should I pay lots of money for such poor camera

  13. What's the SNR10 spec on the OV's BSI anyway?

  14. @ What's the SNR10 spec on the OV's BSI anyway?

    70 Lux, according to Omnivision:

  15. Why we end users care low lux now ? Apple bring us flash. We are happy customers not like some stinky "professional".

  16. I am very surprised about OVT comments, I thought their BSI was 1,4µm then BSI2 with 1,1µm ?

    Sony is 1,75µm.

  17. 1.75um pixel doesn't need a BSI technology: this is just a marketing move. A good 1.75um pixel FSI can easily reach such performance as well.
I'm very interesting on dark current performance (or bright pixels if you prefer) and SNR.
At this point, it is definetily better to have an high resolution 1.4um FSI pixel instead of a 5MP only at the same price. And yes, this is not an APTINA sensor (the pixel target size for the BSI mass production is the 1.1um), best guess OMNI, but I cannot exclude also SONY.
