Weekly Patent Review

There have been quite a few interesting patent applications published this week, a rare statistical fluctuation.

ST LED flicker-reducing HDR sensor patent application US20170118424 "High dynamic range image sensor" by Tarek Lule, Jérôme Chossat, and Benoît Deschamps includes different sized photodiodes, possibly for the next version of their automotive HDR sensor:


Samsung patent application US20170118450 "Low-light image quality enhancement method for image processing device and method of operating image processing system performing the method" by Yong Ju Jung, Kwang Hyuk Bae, Chae Sung Kim, and Joon Seo Yim resolves the tradeoffs between RGB and RWB color patterns - use both and combine their outputs:


Pixart patent application US20170118418 "Dual-aperture ranging system" by Guo-zhen Wang, Yi-lei Chen seems to follow the steps of Dual Aperture startup ideas, just 3 years later:

  2. How will you place 2 storage zones within a not too large pixel?
    For such sensor, you need to be 3.5um or below, for a decent resolution/size, and it would be a very difficult challenge.
    What is the pixel size?

    1. If the TX can be operated at high speed, a single PD is enough. Since they have speed problem, the problem is resolved by adding a small PD so the harshing speed can be reduced.

  3. The pixel pattern looks very similar to Fujifilm SuperCCD SR II and EXR, just applied to CMOS in stead of CCD. I dont understand how such a small difference can be patentable?

    Also, I dont understand why they make such a complicated structure on silion when HDR can be done with alternating sizes of the microlenses in stead. Applicable to any piece of imaging sensor silicon.

  5. I'm confused by the pixel structure, are there 3 storage nodes? MEM_S, MEM_M and FD, and 2 photodiodes PPD_1 and PPD_2?
    Also what's the purpose of TX_L?

    1. it should be for lowering the FD capacitance to increase HS CVG.
