Chipworks teardown reveals that the widely discussed Nokia 808 camera phone with 41MP 1/1.2-inch sensor uses Toshiba sensor. Chipworks compares its size with Samsung Galaxy S3 Sony imager:
The ISP managing the hefty 41MP processing task is Broadcom BCM2763 multi-media processor.
Well, yay for Toshiba. I wonder how the 808 is doing, sales-wise? I wonder what the ASP of the sensor is?! It is possible to put some boundaries on it in terms of what it functionally replaces at one end (plus some wow factor) and what it costs to make a die with a reasonable yield (including dead pixel correction).

ReplyDeletePicture quality is indeed a major factor. But what about the impact on the other factors such as the sensor cost/Yield as Eric mentioned, power consumption that might have big impact on the image quality during video mode?
ReplyDeleteIn addition, according to these images and others, the footprint of such module is around 22mm X 20mm and the height is around 12mm. How that fit with the market trend of having a slim phones?
I'm just wondering if the market will accept feature like optical Zoom with the best image quality BUT with such tradeoffs?
Is the sensor CMOS-FSI? I am curious about the technology node. Could you help to answer? Thx

ReplyDeleteYES, the sensor is CMOS-FSI, NOT BSI. See: that Nokia research paper - haven't got the link now, but it's posted in all of those 808-related articles on the web...
