The Company ended the period with cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments totaling $524.2 million, an increase of $11.4 million from the previous quarter.

Based on current trends, the Company expects revenues for the next quarter will be in the range of $310 million to $340 million.

SeekingAlpha publishes a trascript of Omnivision's earnings call. There was no Q&A session for some reason. Shaw Hong, Chairman and CEO, says on the acquisition news: "by partnering with the consortium and operating as a private company, we will have more flexibility to innovate and develop new solutions for our customers, which will benefit our employees, customers and business partners. We expect the transaction will close within the next nine to 12 months.

As of today, we have not obtained all the necessary approval, nor have we met the closing conditions. As such, there's no assurance that the proposed acquisition by the consortium will close.

  1. This CEO is a failure. Omnivision supplied image sensors to Apple iPhone 4. The rear sensor is 5MP BSI. Apple switched to SONY image sensors in iPhone 4S. The rear sensor is 8MP BSI. Except for the resolution difference the SONY sensor is not better than Omnivision. So how did the CEO lost Apple? My theory is this. After Aptina lost to Omnivison in iPhone 3GS image sensor, several Aptina employees went to Apple. Some may have played a pivotal role in Apple abandoning Omnivision.

Omnivision IPOed in 2000. In 15 years the stock price is still roughly equal to its high in 2000. In the meantime, the CEO awarded himself with lots of shares which he dumped to ignorant shareholders. Despite accumulating over $500 million in cash, he never thought of returning some to the shareholders. Yet he makes lots of money from shareholders.

  2. I think that SONY sensor is uch better in terms of performance. Just look the quality of the OV sensor inside iPad, a lot of noise. Their CEO is too old.

    1. Apple made a lot improvements on iPhone camera. Comparing iPad with iPhone may not be fair. Have you compared iPad Air with iPad Air 2?

    2. I think you missed OV's business philosophy. To use an analogy, OV doesn't want to slay the tiger in the forest, it just wants to run faster than any other prey that the tiger may face!

that sort of sums up OV's approach. all said and done, it has been a business that has consistently delivered profits for the stakeholders, secure employment for its employees, etc. It's no mean achievement.

  3. I have to give Mr. Hong a lot of respect for building OVT over the years. I have lots of issues with Omnivision, but still have to respect what they have accomplished, especially up against Samsung and Sony these days! (Don't anyone drop dead over this comment!)

  4. This article did a comparison between iPad Air camera and iPad Air 2. Except in two places, the author think the two camera quality is almost indistinguishable. The difference in the two places may be due to the resolution differences.

    1. These 2 differences are tremendous. When you pass from 5e noise to 1.5e noise, there is huge difference. 6db less of DR is not always noticable by eyes.
