Polight and Movidius jointly demo 3D camera at MWC in Barcelone this year. "Integrating poLight TLens has enabled us to significantly increase the speed and performance of our new 3D mobile camera demonstration," said Sean Mitchell, CEO at Movidius. "In addition to the faster AF speed, synchronizing the two cameras using the TLens dramatically improves the 3D performance compared to traditional VCM, showcasing our high quality 3D multimedia features."
"I am very pleased to see that TLens speed and the easy synchronization methods can remove a barrier to reaching high quality 3D video capture," said Christian Dupont CEO of poLight.
Update: Optics.org: In an unrelated PR poLight announced that it has collaborated with TI to produce in large volume the Optical MEMS part of its TLens, resulting in faster focus time and lower power consumption.
"Texas Instruments with their MEMS engineering expertise and their worldwide manufacturing operation significantly strengthen our ability to serve our camera module customer demands," said Christian Dupont, CEO of poLight.
Texas Instruments worked very closely with poLight to develop a process that met the device performance needs while at the same time met cost goals. "The new TLens device from poLight AS benefits from TI’s advanced MEMS development and processing expertise along with TI’s experience in very high volume manufacturing," said Faa-Ching Wang, manager of the Heater Chip Business Unit at Texas Instruments. "TI and poLight have collaborated on this innovative device that will help bring greater autofocus performance and functionality to camera phone applications."

Get off your mobile phone's functions have changed it more than the camera, which used more frequent than traditional compact cameras.
Autofocus is a key feature of the mobile phone has become popular as camera.
Until now this has been a complicating factor because it involves mechanics, in that a lens must move inside an electromagnetic coil.
In Horten, the company poLight worked for several years to develop a completely electronic solution that enables autofocus easier and faster.
- In the fall, we are ready to deliver to the companies who make camera systems to mobile phones. They are very excited about our product, and we have received the first contracts. That means we will have our system in the first mobile phones for a year, says Managing Director Christian Dupont at poLight.

Glass, silicon, and 2000 rings
The concept is a proprietary soft auto-focus lens based on a special polymer: A 20 thousandths of a millimeter thin glass plate is placed on a silicon wafer.
Then place a 2 thousandths of a millimeter thin piezoelectric layer on the glass. Next step process is to etch piezolaget making it again around 2000 tiny rings.
Then flip the stack and etch equivalent to 2000 holes in the silicon layer below piezoringene, and in them filled a patented polymer blend.

Cures
So cure the polymer with the glass without the polymer hardens. It is soft and malleable, but with the glass optical properties.
When setting the voltage of the piezoelectric ring, pull it together in time with the excitement and forms convex glass.
Thus there is a continuous conformable lens that can replace today's mechanical systems for focusing.

Ultra-fast
The company's idea has caught on among cellphone manufacturers.
Not only is the new auto focus system easier, but also much faster than current systems: The lens itself responds to about a thousandth of a second.
Now the product is fully developed in two different sizes for up to 5 and 8 megapixel sensor chips, and this fall will be put into production at Texas Instruments plant in Dallas.
In addition to the idea and development is Norwegian, the Norwegian-funded poLight.
The company received 28 million last year - a year that was not speselt hot among investors.

Creates a new THE SOFTWARE
Horten-innovators have more ideas to develop denny solution
- Now we are working together with SINTEF to build the optical stabilization in the lens, and we also see the possibility of creating a system with optical zoom, reveals Dupont.
This will provide mobile features that they have today, and Dupont envisions that this will establish a foundation for a lot of new innovation on the software side.
