PRNewswire: LG, Infineon, and PMD have teamed up to introduce ToF camera in the LG G8 ThinQ smartphone. Infineon's REAL3 image sensor chip will be integrated into the front-facing camera of the upcoming LG G8 ThinQ.
"Infineon is poised to revolutionize the market," said Andreas Urschitz, division president of Infineon's Power Management & Multimarket division. "We have demonstrated service beyond the mere product level – specifically catering to phone OEMs, associated reference design houses and camera module manufacturers. Within five years, we expect 3D cameras to be found in most smartphones and Infineon is poised to contribute a significant share."
"Keeping in mind LG's goal to provide real value to its mobile customers, our newest flagship was designed with ToF technology from inception to give users a unique and secure verification system without sacrificing camera capabilities," said Chang Ma, SVP and head of product strategy at LG Mobile Communications Company. "With innovative technology like ToF, the LG G8 ThinQ will be the optimal choice for users in search of a premium smartphone that offers unmatched camera capabilities."
Do we know how this TOF solution compares to the one from Sony ?
ReplyDeleteWhy does LG select PMD if Sony can deliver a TOF solution?
PMD presented a pretty nifty face unlock in 2018. From what I could see, it worked really robustly in darkness and in direct sunlight. I haven't seen that from Sony.
DeletePMD uses stone-age technology... I mean Sony's technology is also flawed as it burns too much power and isn't really scalable. But it's still better performing than PMD in terms of QE and speed which are crucial parameters for ToF. LG may went with PMD as they were part of the Google Tango project and might be ahead on application level. But the sensor itself... let's not talk about that
ReplyDeleteCould you point to any direct comparison between PMD and Softkinetics (Sony) technology? From my understanding the difference is not that black&white.
DeleteYou may be right by saying pmd uses stone-age Technology. I am just wondering which technology would be state of the art. I don't think Google Tango project was a driver for this decision as Face Unlock is not part of it, am I right? I do not know anything abt Sony but if Sony would be No1 in the would there would be more Phones using its Technology, even Sony phones itself do not use it lol. I think in OPPO R17 Sony Tof is disabled because its not working.
ReplyDeleteFor 3D vendor selection the mobile guys bring in all the candidates (including different technologies) and do a shoot-off. Then they move into business items (cost, delivery, etc.). Just the same as 2D.
