Digitimes reports that Pixart is expected to start small volume shipments of its gesture recognition chips for notebook and other mobile applications in the second quarter of 2013, according to the newspaper's sources.
Based on a demo I saw a while back, I assume this is a 2D sensor with LED illumination - or active 2D - and can detect simple gestures. Essentially a proximity sensor, and the demo seemed okay for simple finger movements.
That is exactly what I said on PMD's demo. They wast a lot of money on the meaningless demo. Such kind of simple device is far enough for the applications shown on Samsung S4 smartphone. Even a 2D sensor is sometime more than necessary. from my point of a quad photodiode is enough for such simple finger movement detection.
