Google Nexus 6P Features Large 12.3MP Sensor
The Verge, Phonearena, Androidpolice: Google announces Huawei-made Nexus 6P phone featuring a large 1/2.3-inch 12.3MP sensor with 1.55um pixels. The sensor is made by Sony. One of the trade-offs in such a large sensor size is a lack of optical image stabilization in Nexus 6P.

It's a nice overall phone, but I was expecting OIS and 4K HDR video.
ReplyDeleteWithout OIS video will suffer unless we use a tripod or a handheld gimbal stabilizer...
I'd love to see a comparison with Samsung Galaxy S6, and Sony Xperia Z5 evaluating stills and video.
What would happen if you film @200FPS and align the resulting images? Would that be at all possible? I'd guess sharpness should be equivalent or better than 1/200th second exposures.

ReplyDeleteI like the camera specs. 1,55 micron sounds like a good compromise for phones, but i don't like the currently missing OIS. Looking at the pixel count, 4608 x 2592, its exactly 20% more in both horisontal and vertical direction then 4K 3840 x 2160. The phone probably have good G-sensors. Its possible that a software update will give it OIS by moving the crop. +/- 10% OIS in both H and V direction.
ReplyDeleteIt the sensor can output a 4K 16:9 crop from the 4608 x 2592 pixel sensor, moving the crop according to the G-sensors it should be able to have +/- 10% OIS in the vertical direction and

Looks to most likely be this Sony IMX377 you linked to.
DeleteIf it is IMX377, then it is crazy, just die size is 1cm by 0.8cm. at least twice as big as old sensor.
