Phase One Trichromatic: Marketing vs Technology

Luminous Landscape publishes an article by Doug Peterson on the recently announced Phase One Trichromatic image sensor explaining the science behind it. There is a striking difference between the marketing presentation and what has been really done.

Here is how Phase One marketing presents Trichromatic color filter:

However, the real color response looks quite different:

The main color filter improvements developed together with Sony are:
  • The amount of overlap between the red, green, and blue spectral responses is decreased and is steeper
  • The improved “tail clipping” cleans color contamination
  • Near-UV cut
  • Colors balanced with respect to how much light pixels see

Thanks to TG for the pointer!

  1. I don't known who makes the shitty CFA on the right plot but the left looks like a standard CFA spectrum so I don't understand what the fuss is about.
If you really want to do CFA without overlapping, you might be better off doing interference filter lithographic pixels.

    1. Here are some examples of CFAs that look similar to the right one, to a degree:

    2. Actually, I'm curious how a rainbow looks like when captured by this "non-shitty" sensor?
