Pelican Imaging Presentation, Videos

Pelican Chief Imaging Scientist Dan Lelescu presented "The Computational Array Camera" at the IEEE Santa Clara Valley Consumer Electronics Society meeting on Sept. 23, 2014. Few slides from the presentation:

Pelican also publishes two depth map videos that Dan Lelescu showed at the meeting: Pelican lobby, and trees outside.

  1. the depth seems only at close range. I have seen much better depth from 2 and 4 cameras. what is the upside of using 16 vs 2 or 4 sensors ?

  2. Problem with pelican is the crappy sensor and mediocre lenses. We have much better results using off the shelf mobile camera modules.

  3. The "array" idea really did them in. It puts artificial constraints on all the important parameters -- optics, sensor, and baseline. Poor sensors and optics give them bad quality and low resolution. Small baseline gives them crappy depth resolution. It's a good idea that's poorly executed.

  4. It is said that the lens and sensors come from HiMax Imaging, no surprise. Maybe they have difficulties to find other partners.

  5. I think the sensor is customized by Aptina

  6. Rumor is Aptina cancelled the project going forward and also the lens manufacturer cancelled. Does the technology work?
