Fraunhofer Institute and Awaiba Developed 1 mm^3 Camera

Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM) in Berlin, Germany and Awaiba GmbH with support of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena, Germany developed what they call the smallest camera in the world, only 1 cubic mm in volume, including its wafer-scale lens. The camera is intended for disposable endoscopy applications. It has a resolution of 62.500 pixels and transmits the image information through the endoscope via an electrical cable. Stephan Voltz, who is the CEO of Awaiba GmbH, says that "at 1,0 times 1,0 times 1.0 millimeters, this camera is as small as coarsely ground grain of salt – the smallest camera that we are aware of." About 28,000 such image sensors fit onto one wafer.

  1. the sensor output should be analog, I guess ...

  2. Anybody else produces CMOS sensors up to 1.5mm x 1.5 mm? OVT's smallest sensor is 1.8mm x 1.8mm.

    Thanks!

  5. Medigus has a 0.7 mm x 0.7 mm imager with almost 50,000 pixels

  6. Well, it's a problem of packaging and not really a CIS design issue. The imaging performance doesn't need to be high except the color rendition for medical applications. But for the color, you can do a lot of post-processing in the control box.

  7. so this is 20% the pixel count of a VGA camera. what is the value here? size for one. what else?

  8. Taking a peak at a lot of places offers values that are only done presently with X-ray, ultrasound ...

Examples include ThirdEye Retroscope, catheter mounted imaging module, ...

The key is to reduce the price at disposable level.

  10. You can ask Awaiba. If you have meaningful volumes, I'm sure Awaiba would be happy to sell this stuff to you.
