Chipworks reverse engineering of recently announced Nikon DSLR D5200 revealed Toshiba-made APS-C-sized sensor inside. The sensor features 24MP resolution with 5fps speed and 1080p30 video mode. Chipworks discovered 4 Cu metal layers on the sensor. The full reverse engineering report is available on Chipworks site.
Thanks to RF for sending me the link!
Also Expeed3 had changed from El-158 to ML-1131 Package on Package type.
ReplyDeleteThere must be several different Expeed3 types.
Meanwhile: Has anyone found out who sourced the APS-C-Sensor in the Nikon D3200? No good answers on that are anywhere on the web.
ReplyDeleteNikon D3200 is a Nikon designed Renesas fabbed sensor with NC81369R die marking see http://www.chipworks.com/blog/technologyblog/2012/10/23/full-frame-dslr-cameras-part-1-nikon-vs-sony/
DeleteIt seems Nikon didn't leave a Sony territory...

I'm not sure that link to the Sony press release has anything to do with this story about the Toshiba sensor in the Nikon camera.
DeleteThat Sony press release is about Sony buying back the fab that was previously used to make Playstation-3 processors for SONY to make more image sensors with that new found fab capacity.
Are you suggesting that Sony is a now an image sensor foundry for Toshiba, to fabricate sensors that Toshiba then sells to Nikon? It doesn't sound likely, but you never know.

I don't know. The link was published by a guy who works for Sony on a forum where the topic was discussed.
DeleteActually, I'm just curious which DSLR production model: Canon's or Nikon's (say) is more effective in a long term perspective...
Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteI am doing a research using a Nikon D7100 to take pictures. I would have liked to know more about its sensor in order to understand what he really measures. Does anyone know how to get the Chipwork review or something that could look like it for free ? (18500$ is way too expensive for me !)
Thank you !
Hello "anonymous", at least tell us WHO YOU ARE before asking important/interesting information. That will drastically increase your chance of success !
DeleteSorry !
DeleteI am a student working in internship in a french laboratory. I am using a Nikon D7100 to take pictures of a very interesting organism : Physarum Polycephalum. The aim of the study is to understand the morphogenesis of the little slime mould... However we need more precise informations about the sensor and our lab cannot afford the price of the Chipwork's review !
