ArmDevices interviews Sony representative on large format 100MP sensor in PhaseOne camera. Sony roadmap in the video promises 100MP and 150MP medium format BSI sensors to be introduced in 2018:

Semiconductor memory chips are 100 times denser, so this is modest progress.

Well, image sensor's each pixel has 12 bit data, so actual data storage capacity is higher by a factor of 4096. It is beyond memory!!!

Aside from above mentioned technologies which do not yet have working prototypes, there are film technologies from Invisage and Panasonic that can go to lower pixel pitches of 0.6um for example without getting decapitated by the full well capacity like the current silicon technology. The problem at such small pixel pitches are the lack of microlenses and optics that can support such high definition in mobile space, not to mention full stack interconnect technology is not there yet for such a tiny pixel size. 150MP+ sensor using 0.6um would have 2/3" format.
ReplyDeleteWould be nice to know what are the video capabilities of these sensors. Assuming 3:2 AR, the 150MP is 15Kx10K - with binning it may produce almost 8K picture! With so much pins around the package... please please, make it at 60 fps :)
