I thought this business was shut down two years ago. Kodak's image sensor solutions website lists CMOS sensors as discontinued products. So, what Kodak is selling now? Patents?
The newspaper says that the company expects to make $300 million to $400 million selling some assets, such as the CMOS image sensor business. Perez said Kodak had been shopping it around for more than a year, but didn't want to sell in a down economy when it would command less. The improving economy makes selling both CMOS and some real estate assets potentially more lucrative, he said.
Kodak Rochester Employees |
When I was a kid, all the stores and car dealers in Rochester would have sales the weekend the Kodak employees got their yearly bonuses. Not quite the same impact now...
ReplyDeleteIt's worth opening the "Comments" link at the bottom of the story and reading some of the posts there. If you put the pieces together there's a rather versatile cautionary tale on the challenges of success.
ReplyDeleteSorry if that's oblique. My wife volunteered to have me shovel 20" of snow off our daughter's pre-school's roof yesterday afternoon (which I did) and I woke up at 1 AM thinking about a jot problem in terms of snow removal. So I'm primed for odd lines of thought and can't get back to sleep.
One of the anonymous comments to the story might explain what happens with CMOS business sale:
ReplyDelete"I am a current employee of the Image Sensor department Mr. Perez is referring to in this article and can confidently say that we are NOT in the CMOS business. We make CCD imagers, not CMOS. In Sept of 2009 we bowed out of the CMOS business after 5 long years never once making a profit. I find it comical that our dept manager just told us all on Monday that we are getting back into the CMOS business, and now 4 days later.....we are being sold?"
@CDM. Thanks for sharing the pre-school snow removal story.
ReplyDeleteWho can be the buyer?
ReplyDeleteIt should be good that Kodak be bought by GalaxyCore....
ReplyDelete@image sensor world: Where did you get that one from?? The one you quoted?? can you post a link?? I am interested to read that one...
ReplyDeleteI've quoted one of the comments to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle article from the paper's web site. The link to the comments is in the article.
ReplyDeleteIt is not surprising to me that Kodak is finally selling this division. The senior manager of this division should have been fired when the CMOS business was shut down for his ineptness in running this business.
