Probably they worked with a design house, like they did back in the Photobit days. (Actually they were a strategic investor in Photobit and a great company to partner with).
In cars, owning certain parts of the car territory is key to becoming a tier 1 supplier. In Gentex's case, they own the mirror and it has become an instrumentation hub. There are only a few major mirror suppliers in the automotive industry. Gentex developed the first electrochromic dimming mirrors way back, and have been copied by their competitors such as Donnelly (now Magna).
