Sony Announces 8.3MP Security Module

Pocket-lint and I-Micronews report that Sony has announced the development of a "coin-sized" HD camera module for use in security and industry. The 8.3MP module footprint is just 9.5 x 7.1mm, although it has some added stuff on the flex cable:

The MCB1172 module from Sony Europe's Image Sensing Solutions Division is capable of delivering 720p, 30fps video and includes AF, video stabilization and face detection. It also features a high sensitivity mode and a slow-motion mode, delivering 120fps as well as the option of 16x zoom. The module is reported to be available for mass production, products with the module in will likely hit the business markets later this year.

The strange thing is that I'm unable to find any official word from Sony.

  2. I wonder what kind of sensor technology can run 120fps like this.

  3. This module has been available as an engineering sample since aound last December. The custom designed module was especially designed for Samsung by Sony, and is manufactured by the Sony cybershot mob. I have on good authority that the sample price for this particularly beasty was in excess of US$50 a piece and the mass production price was tentatively around US$35

There is a lot of technology on the module, and so much is packed on it that you could consider it a sub-system.

    8MP Sensor
    Expensive Lens
    Voice coil motor
    Voice coil driver
    Image Signal Processor
DRAM (Yes, there is piece of DRAM under that metal cage)
Licensing of tech from various companies
Built in a high cost country (Japan)

If you ask me, there is no chance in the world anyone would buy it for US$35 a piece. Its probably why Sony are openly announcing it, to find themselves more customers

I believe, this is for low-res video only, QCIF or some such.

That make more sense if it's low-res only.
