Pelican Imaging' Processing Challenges

Qualcomm Media publishes Purnam Sheth, Pelican Imaging' VP of Engineering, video story on computational challenges of multi-array camera:

Another video at Qualcomm's site presents Arcsoft's NightHawk low-light video capture software that improves video in poor lighting conditions. "By only using the CPU, NightHawk would not be able to run in real time since the frame rate would be too low, not to mention that the power consumption would be too high. By using the CPU, GPU, DSP and ISP, ArcSoft claims that the NightHawk application is able to run in real time with more than 30% power savings."

  1. With the quality of the images pelican show I don't think it really maters how they run their pipe. It needs to work before it implemented.

  2. How much business have you done with the Asian supply chain? If they are cheap enough the quality just needs to be "good enough".

  3. The Chinese market will never pay 30 usd for a camera with such poor performance. They published images a few days ago and it's all color artifacts and soft. I agree for 3-4 usd they would love this.

  4. It's evident that you don't know Chinese market at all! Chinese market is the most competitive in the world, you need to provide both performance and the price. Besides the products should be rockly stables otherwise you will loss your business immediately. Chinese companies make the commodity products, so if they can not sell easily then they will not buy at all.

  5. The value-add is 3D. If they can provide "good enough" 2D using OVT crap-mos as the base-line "good enough", and then add 3D at less the cost of the equivalent OVT stereo-equivalent they have a business.
