DeviceSpecifications reports a rumor that Sony is about to announce 1/1.8-inch 38MP sensor for smartphones. The new sensor is said to have a number of interesting features:
- Quad Pixel Phase Detect AF (QP2DAF)
- Ambient Light Sensor (ALS)
- 24fps speed at full resolution
- Dual sensor synchronization
- Dual Bayer and White HDR coding pixel array
ISP requirements to debayer this sucker are probably going to be HUGE!
ReplyDeleteNot clear, where is the phase detect AF?
I worked with the 41Mp 1/1.2" Nokia sensor. It could get by with the Qualcomm processing of that era just fine. I think things have probably improved in the last 7 years or so...
DeleteALS integrated into the CIS did itself? AMS will love this innovation that may canibalize one of its biggest consumer sensor market :(
ReplyDeletePeople would love a huge front camera bump on their phone to accommodate this sensor and make use of its ALS...
DeleteInteresting but i don't think this will work for cell phones, in terms of physical size.
ReplyDeleteSmartphone? 38 MP? I thought lenses that can support that kind of resolution are crazy expensive, huge and basically only for telescopes or other selected niches? Can anyone please comment what kind of resolution mobile phone lenses could possibly realistically support?
ReplyDeletenokias has 41 MP before . please check.
DeleteAO had mobile phone lens designs at F2.1 for sensors of this size. Not sure if they have been able to improve on the thickness of these (made thinner) since the old Pureview, but it could still work. BTW, one of the old Pureview 41MP wafers seems to be listed on eBay...
Deletesmartphones usually don't achieve single pixel resolution. Plastic optics would be a severe limitation in this case, especially considering the typically small pixel size.
ReplyDeleteThe pixel size is reasonable for a plastic lens. How big do you think it needs to be for these to work well?
DeleteI find a more compelling feature in the bit depth. 10-bit vs 8-bit. Can get 30-bit color from this sensor, which at this resolution is a really nice thing!
ReplyDeleteThis pattern has been tried a decade ago. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kodak_RGBW_patterns.svg. It suffered from severe color moire then.
ReplyDeletePixels are now smaller than the diffraction limit of visible light. The lens may effectively act as a LPF, reducing moire. This is essentially a color sensor interleaved with a mono sensor.
ReplyDeleteStrong Color moire was visible even in coarse features on the Moto X using this pattern. For example, see the center of this photo on Anandtech's review: https://images.anandtech.com/reviews/gadgets/Motorola/X/Colors/MotoX-04.jpg
