eMRAM for Image Sensor Applications
Since logic chip size of Sony's image sensor, bonding of pixel wafers and logic wafers, are limited to be equal to or smaller than that of the pixel chip, we have been using DRAM and SRAM while battling the enhancement of image sensor functions and area limitations. To incorporate further functionalities, there is a demand for better performance memory that can suppress the memory macro area with small bit cells, as well as non-volatile memory to keep a code or an administration data without external memories. Embedded STT-MRAM has a bit cell size that is less than one-third of that of SRAM and possesses non-volatile characteristics, and eMRAM is suitable for small-scale systems such as smart MCUs that do not have external memory. Therefore, at this point, eMRAM has been commercialized in GNSS (GPS), smart watch and wireless communication systems. In the same way, it is presumed to be suitable for frame buffer memory and data memory in image sensor systems. This talk will present how the device can enhance its functionality with the assumption of application in image sensors.
