ST 2m-Range ToF Sensor

Webwire: While ST has already shown the new ToF sensor, the VL53L0X 2m-range 940nm-wavelength ToF sensor is officially presented just now:

"The VL53L0X extends the ToF measurement range to two meters, and is accurate to within ±3%. It is also faster, measuring the distance in under 30ms, and highly energy-efficient, consuming only 20mW in active ranging mode and drawing 5µA in standby. At 2.4mm x 4.4mm x 1mm, it is also the smallest such device in the market.

The VL53L0X is in production now in a 12-pad reflow-compatible module, priced at $2.30 for orders of 1,000 pieces.

  1. Datasheet indicates that range reduces in 5000 Lux ambient light outdoors to 0.4m on a 17% grey target. 20mW at 10 Hz. Useful but it would be good to have 2m. Perhaps ST can develop it to give lots of range in sunlight? A bit more power is no problem.

  2. it would be nice to understand if the ambient light limitation is due to SPAD dead time or due to read-out dead time.

  3. From datasheet "Outdoor: eq. 5kLux equivalent sunlight (10kcps/SPAD)"
This tells that they cannot operate above 10k counts per sec from ambient light.
