Compression Limits Nearing

Electronic Design published an article on compression algorithm evolution and its limits by Al Wegener, CTO and founder of Samplify Systems, Santa Clara, CA. It looks like still image compression does not have much potential to improve in the coming years, while video compression's future looks better:
