Yole on Machine Vision Market

Yole Developpement publishes a report "The industrial vision market matters, and the ecosystem is reconfiguring."

"The supply chain of key image sensor components has centralized. Yole estimates that the top five camera players have 53% market share in industrial cameras. The top three image sensor players have more than 78% market share.

As software further improves camera function, leading players like Cognex and Basler have acquired software companies to strengthen their competitiveness. Smaller players are merging and gradually becoming larger players, for example TKH Group has merged many smaller camera players.

There have also been strong alliances, including upstream and downstream mergers to become giants, such as the recent Teledyne acquisition of FLIR. We have also seen some Chinese players come to the surface, such as Hikrobot, Huaray, and Imavision. They have grown by absorbing the technology of external players. As global manufacturing shifts to China, the Chinese machine vision market will be huge. Chinese machine vision players will therefore become important to watch in this market."

  1. Not sure I understand this.

It seems Yole reports Barcode as part of the application, on Logistic/Factory/Retail

But none of the big Barcode leaders are listed, like Honeywell, Zebra or Datalogic.
Are these market size reported including also the 3 companies above ?

    1. We have segmented the application market between Machine Vision (MV) and Automated Data capture(ADC), the camera player ranking list presented in the extract is the MV side, in the report there is also an ADC list indeed with Honeywell Zebra and Datalogic as the main ADC players.

  2. It would be interesting to see a market breakdown in terms of camera/image sensor units. For example Cognex or Keyence have rather more "intelligent cameras" or "sensors" while Basler serves rather the "pure camera" market, so the revenue per camera might be quite different for this companies. I think in terms of camera number or number of image sensors, the market distribution would look differently. Anyone knows of a market size estimation for "industrial" global shutter sensors?

    1. to collect some numbers for a ballpark estimation (I'd like to get some feeling about the size of the market):
SVS Vistek - member of TKH group reports for example the shipment of its 100k cameras - in its total history - a surprisingly low number isnt it?
      https://www.invision-news.de/newsarchiv/100-000te-svs-vistek-kamera/

Basler does not report numbers recently. But in their annual report for 2018 they still do:
      https://www.baslerweb.com/de/unternehmen/investoren/finanzinformationen/finanzberichte/
they report they shipped 400k cameras in 2018. According to yole they represent about 6% of the machine vision market. I guess they represent a bit more of the market in terms of number of cameras, maybe 10%. So I guess the total market for industrial cameras using global shutter senosrs is in the 4-5Mio/year, could this be a true magnitude?

btw. this 400k cameras resulted in 140M sales in 2018 for Basler, so the average price of such a camera was 350€. Yole estimates a market size of 1.1B for factory automation. This matches the guess, right?
